UNIFIED CARRIER REGISTRATION (UCR)
You are required to obtain a UCR permit if you are one of the following:
- Motor carriers providing motor vehicle transportation in interstate commerce for compensation;
- Motor private carrier (other than a motor carrier) transporting property by motor vehicle when the carrier is the owner or lessee of the property being transported and the property is being transported for sale, lease or rent or to further a commercial enterprise;
- Freight forwarders; or
- Leasing companies
The UCR (Unified Carrier registration) registers your USDOT number with all the states. It has been required for all interstate carrier and Brokers since 2010 and is one of the most heavily enforced registrations. The UCR expires every Dec 31 and requires yearly renewals. UCR registration fees are based on the number of trucks that operate interstate (outside your home state). Trailers and intrastate trucks are exempt.
Your USDOT number must be listed as an Interstate Carrier in the SAFER database to complete the UCR registration.
